Outright betting markets involve odds on any team or participant to win a given competition, league or tournament. In other words, outright odds are offered by sportsbooks for a wager on the eventual champion. Outright markets are also often categorized as ‘Futures’ because the result will often be resolved further into the future as compared to a simple match result. Outright winner markets may also be categorized as an ‘Ante Post’ betting market (or Ante-Post). This term originates from horse racing, where a bet is placed in advance of the overnight declaration stage of a race. On the day of the race, the odds will often change to be less favourable.
For extremely popular quadrennial tournaments like any of the various World Cups in Football, Rugby or Cricket, outright odds will be available several years ahead of the actual event. For popular annual competitions and leagues, outright odds can be available as soon as the latest edition of the competition comes to an end. Most major sports competitions will have outright odds available at least a month before they begin, but not all sportsbooks offer a complete complement of outright markets.
Outright markets are also available during the given competitions, though odds will change based on results. Note that as any competition progresses, sportsbooks may take their outright odds off the board and temporarily stop accepting any associated outright bets as they analyze things and prepare their next set of outright odds.
At any point in time, OddsJet will only display the best odds that are currently available from our sportsbooks for your outright betting market of choice. When a sportsbook has taken a particular outright market off the board, OddsJet removes the odds that are no longer available, so you only ever see currently available outright odds.
As any sports competition gets ready to begin, sportsbooks prepare their odds for each team or participant ‘to win outright.’ If your team or participant of interest is a long shot, but you think they can ‘Do a Leicester,’ your odds will be best before the competition begins. As any long odds team or participant does well, surprising the world with good results, the odds will be adjusted and shrink to pay less as the competition or season progresses. So if you have a feeling in your gut, lock in your odds early.
If you feel that a fairly popular team or participant might end up as the outright winner, the best odds could very well come mid-season. This is especially the case with team sports. Before the beginning of the season, popular teams tend to have very short odds, meaning a winning bet will not pay very much. However, if that team experiences a brief run of poor results during the season, their outright odds may be adjusted higher. So if you can remain faithful in such a case, it may pay more to wait for such an opportunity.
